Rick Younger is in his 8th year as head coach of the Butler Community College volleyball program. The Lady Grizzlies had a record breaking season in 2008, being ranked in the top five of the national poll for 6 weeks during the season. They finished the season ranked number nine in the nation in the final regular season poll and with a record of 37-8. Butler has now had four seasons in a row of 20 wins or more the last three have been 25 wins or more.
2008 Butler also had its first NJCAA 1st team All-American in Crystal Blue and three other players were named All-Conference. 2009 followed up with Demetria Williams being named as a NJCAA All-American.
2008 Academics are extremely important and again The Lady Grizzlies had three Academic All-Americans. Butler finished in the top four of all NJCAA Volleyball teams in the Country with a 3.57 GPA. 2009 The team GPA was 3.55 and had one more Academic All-American.
"We take a lot of pride in the effort put out in Academics," Younger said.
Rick has been part of USAV Volleyball for over fifteen years; three years with the Shockwave Volleyball Club, one year with the Andover Juniors, and the director and coach of the Wichita Juniors for six years and Club 81 for one year. For the last four years we have sponsored the last round of the HOA Power league.
"We love the fact that we can still be a part of the HOA club community," Younger says. In the summer of 2005 Rick took his 17-u Shockwave Club to the National Junior Olympic Championships in Salt Lake City. His team finished 27 th over all in the American division going 6-3. Rick was involved with coaching middle school and high school for over 15 years.
Rick has been active in other camps around the area working for several years with Wichita State Team camps and Pittsburg State Team camps.
Rick is married to Cathy and they have three children Sarah (and husband, Russ) Benton, Ricky and Becca.
"We continue to build a program that has tradition," Younger says. "We are very diligently establishing a base of recruiting which is the starting point for all programs. We continue to pursue top recruits to raise our program each year. We also play the toughest competition in the country on the junior college level trying to raise our level of play. "
